Miss Mildred was born on November 27, 1842 as the youngest daughter of Tucker Carrington and Mary Watkins Carrington. She was named after one of her grandmothers. Because she was the youngest of the four sisters that ran the School the pupils confided in Miss Mildred often. With some of the students she stayed in contact until the day she died.
On October 21, 1926 the last sister, Miss Mildred died at the age of 83 years. She is laid to rest at the Johnson-Carrington cemetery here on the property.

]]>During the years that the School operated, she was the one that managed the farm, supplying the table of delicious fruits and vegetables. Miss Agnes was very skilled and was the one whom all of the sisters deferred. They used to call her in fun “Bismark”, when she would retire to plan new schemes for the farm and school. They would say “Bismark is planning”!
For the girls that attended the School, Miss Agnes was their ‘mother confessor’ and if morals or manners needed to be corrected, she would call the pupils to her room quietly, one at a time, and tell in a gentle but firm way how to behave next time.
Miss Agnes was wonderful with children. She discovered the good in each one of them and developed it into the best. Her younger cousins gave her the pet name “Ansie”.
Miss Agnes died in 1887, only 53 years old. She is laid to rest at the Johnson-Carrington cemetery here on the property.

]]>Miss Belle was born January 28, 1837 as the sixth daughter of Tucker Carrington and Mary Watkins Carrington. It seems that Miss Belle was the quiet one of the four sisters that ran the school. She was in charge of the housekeeping and feeding the hungry mouths, and so she was a favorite for the young ladies who lived at Sunnyside.
Miss Belle died on November 17, 1915 at the age of 78 years. She is laid to rest at the Johnson-Carrington cemetery here on the property.

]]>Miss Emily was born on January 15, 1835 at Finneywood, Virginia, as the fifth daughter of Tucker Carrington and Mary Watkins Carrington. She was educated partly at her father’s home under the instruction of a governess, and partly in the Clarksville school. Her life was largely spend in teaching and when her sister Agnes died in 1887 she became the principal of the Sunnyside School.
Miss Emily had a wonderful brain, a clear understanding and a perfect judgement. She was admired for her intellect, ability, initiative, clear understanding and a perfect judgement. She is described as a “truly great lady”. A noble woman and a courageous woman, a loyal friend, sparkling with wit and humor.
Miss Emily died on September 22, 1922 at the respected age of 87 years. She is laid to rest at the Johnson-Carrington cemetery here on the property.

]]>When the School opened her doors, Mrs. Carrington became part of it. The students called her the “Old Miss”. Mrs. Carrington gave reading lessons to the youngest. And every Friday evening the girls took their mending down and sewed while Miss Emily or Miss Mildred read an interesting story to them. And every Sunday evening the young ladies sat around the big fire in Mrs. Carrington’s chamber and repeated their catechism. Mrs. Carrington even joined in.
Mrs. Carrington, the ‘Old Miss’, died on December 4, 1887 at the age of 84 years. She is laid to rest at the Johnson-Carrington cemetery here on the property.
